The Southwestern Christian University softball team traveled to Plainview, Texas for a four-game series against Wayland Baptist University, competing in a weekend filled with offense, momentum swings, and tough losses.
Game 1: Late Push Falls Short, 5-4
SCU opened the series with a strong offensive showing but came up just short in a 5-4 loss.
The Eagles tallied 11 hits, highlighted by Danielle Burleson's 3-for-4 performance and RBI, while Jessie Moralez added a triple and run driven in.
After trailing early, SCU chipped away with runs in the second and sixth before scoring two more in the seventh to threaten a comeback. However, Wayland Baptist held on after building an early lead behind a 13-hit performance.
Game 2: Big Inning Dooms SCU, 10-5
Game 2 saw SCU again show offensive life, but a costly third inning proved decisive in a 10-5 loss.
The Eagles scored in four different innings, with Trinity Norwood collecting two hits and Jasmine Olivas driving in two runs.
Wayland Baptist broke the game open with an eight-run third inning, capitalizing on multiple SCU errors to swing momentum completely. Despite continuing to battle offensively, SCU couldn't recover from the deficit.
Game 3: Back-and-Forth Battle Ends in 7-6 Loss
SCU delivered one of its strongest offensive efforts in Game 3 but fell in a tightly contested 7-6 game.
The Eagles scored six runs on nine hits, with Hannah Keele leading the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Trinity Norwood added two hits and scored twice.
After taking a 6-2 lead midway through the game, SCU saw Wayland Baptist rally late, scoring runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to walk away with the win.
Game 4: Offensive Output Not Enough in 10-7 Finale
The series finale turned into another high-scoring affair, with SCU falling 10-7 despite a strong start.
The Eagles jumped out early, scoring three runs in the second inning behind extra-base hits from Hannah Keele, Jasmine Olivas, and Sabrina Gilbert.
SCU finished with 10 hits, including multi-hit performances from Norwood and Keele. However, Wayland Baptist responded with a six-run fifth inning to take control and secure the sweep.
Series Summary
Despite being swept, SCU showed consistent offensive production throughout the weekend, scoring 22 total runs across four games. Players like Norwood, Keele, and Olivas were key contributors at the plate.
However, defensive miscues and a few big innings by Wayland Baptist proved costly, as SCU was unable to close out games or hold late leads.
The Eagles will look to tighten up defensively and turn their offensive consistency into wins as they move forward in conference play.
