Softball wins the Weekend

Southwestern Christian turned in a complete performance Saturday in Mesquite, Texas, earning a pair of wins over Cottey College and Texas A&M–Texarkana to improve to 4–0 on the season.


Game 1: Southwestern Christian 6, Cottey (MO) 2

Southwestern Christian opened the doubleheader with a 6–2 victory over Cottey, using early offense and a strong pitching effort to control the game.

Cottey struck first in the top of the first inning, but the Eagles responded immediately. H. Keele doubled to open the bottom half and later scored, while K. Coy drove in a run with a bunt single. E. Garza added an RBI groundout as SCU took a 2–1 lead.

The Eagles added to their advantage in the second inning. A. Underwood reached safely and was replaced by pinch runner V. Bridges, who later scored on Coy's RBI single to make it 3–1.

Cottey pulled within one in the third inning, but the SCU pitching staff settled in from there. L. King earned the win, allowing just one unearned run over two innings. G. Wendling followed with two solid innings, and M. Weger closed the game by throwing three scoreless innings, allowing no hits.

Offensively, Southwestern Christian extended the lead in the fifth and sixth innings. J. Olivas singled in a run in the fifth, and the sixth inning featured a triple by K. Snapp, followed by RBI hits from R. Tom and T. Norwood. SCU finished with 14 hits, led by Keele's 3-for-4 performance and two RBIs from Coy.


Game 2: Southwestern Christian 9, Texas A&M–Texarkana 4

In the nightcap, Southwestern Christian bounced back from an early deficit to defeat Texas A&M–Texarkana 9–4 behind a decisive third inning

The Eagles trailed 4–0 after two innings, but the offense came alive in the third. SCU scored seven runs in the inning, highlighted by a grand slam from T. Norwood that tied the game. The inning continued with RBI doubles from K. McCollom, J. Moralez, and R. Tom, giving the Eagles a 7–4 lead.

On the mound, M. Weger delivered a dominant relief outing, throwing five shutout innings to earn the win. Weger limited Texarkana to five hits and allowed no runs while stabilizing the game after the early innings.

Southwestern Christian added two more runs in the sixth inning when D. Burleson singled in both K. Coy and R. Tom, extending the lead to 9–4.

The Eagles totaled 13 hits in the game, with Tom going 3-for-3 and scoring twice, while Norwood drove in four runs. SCU's pitching and defense closed out the final innings to secure the sweep.
