BETHANY, Okla. — History was made Tuesday afternoon as the Southwestern Christian University Eagles softball team defeated the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers 9–7, marking SCU's first victory over USAO since 2016.
The milestone win came in the second game of a doubleheader, as the Eagles rebounded from a 5–0 loss in the opener to secure the program's long-awaited breakthrough.
Bouncing Back After Game One
USAO controlled the first matchup behind a strong pitching performance, limiting Southwestern Christian to just three hits while striking out 12 in a 5–0 decision.
Despite solid efforts from pitcher
M. Weger, who allowed five runs (four earned) across seven innings, SCU could not generate timely offense.
That result only set the stage for a dramatic turnaround in Game Two.
Fast Start Sparks the Eagles
Southwestern Christian wasted no time flipping the momentum. The Eagles scored in the first inning and added three more in the third, fueled by aggressive baserunning and clutch contact hitting.
-
H. Keele delivered a standout performance, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
-
D. Burleson and J. Moralez each drove in key runs during the early surge.
SCU built a 4–1 lead before USAO answered with a six-run fifth inning to reclaim control at 7–4.
Fifth-Inning Rally Changes Everything
Rather than folding, the Eagles produced their defining moment in the bottom of the fifth.
Capitalizing on defensive miscues and timely hits, Southwestern Christian erupted for five runs to retake the lead, 9–7. The rally included:
-
An RBI single from E. Garza.
-
A go-ahead two-run double by K. Coy.
-
Additional unearned runs sparked by pressure on the basepaths and USAO errors.
The Eagles finished with 11 hits and seven RBIs in the game.
Pitching Closes the Door
After USAO's big inning, SCU's pitching staff settled in. M. Weger returned to the circle in relief and tossed two scoreless innings to earn the win, allowing no hits down the stretch.
The defense held firm late, preventing any comeback attempt and securing the historic victory.
A Statement Win for the Program
The 9–7 result pushed Southwestern Christian to 7–1 on the season at the time and represented more than just another tally in the win column—it snapped a decade-long drought against one of the region's perennial contenders.
For a program looking to establish itself as a conference force, Tuesday's comeback showed resilience, offensive depth, and the ability to respond under pressure.
