SCU Athletics Hosts Inaugural Championship Chapel to Honor National Tournament Teams
BETHANY, Okla. — Southwestern Christian University Athletics celebrated a historic year of athletic achievement and faith on campus by hosting its first-ever Championship Chapel, recognizing five Eagles programs that competed in National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) national championship events.
The inaugural event brought together student-athletes, coaches, staff and members of the university community to celebrate the dedication, teamwork and perseverance that led SCU teams to the national stage during the 2026 season.
Led by Athletic Director Joe Blackwell and master of ceremonies Cedric Sunray, the Voice of the Eagles, the service highlighted the accomplishments of SCU's track and field, women's basketball, women's soccer, softball and baseball programs.
"Championships and national accomplishments are the result of commitment, sacrifice, teamwork and perseverance," was the message behind the celebration, which also emphasized the importance of honoring God through the opportunities and abilities given to student-athletes.
The program recognized each team for its national tournament accomplishments, with special attention given to two programs that finished as NCCAA national runners-up and a baseball team that captured a national championship.
SCU women's soccer and softball were both recognized for finishing as NCCAA national runners-up, marking significant accomplishments for their respective programs. Track and field and women's basketball were honored for their NCCAA national qualifiers and their efforts in representing Southwestern Christian on the national stage.
The celebration concluded with recognition of the 2026 SCU baseball team, which captured the NCCAA National Championship. Following a championship video, members of the Eagles baseball team received their national championship rings in recognition of their title-winning season.
In addition to the team accomplishments, SCU recognized several individuals for their outstanding achievements and contributions. Athletic trainer Jordan Berry was honored for receiving the Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine Excellence Award and being named Sooner Athletic Conference Athletic Trainer of the Year. Track and field athlete Malachi Weatherly received special recognition for qualifying for the NAIA Indoor National Championships, while softball standout Hannah Keele was recognized as an NAIA All-American.
Beyond celebrating wins and postseason accomplishments, Championship Chapel provided an opportunity to recognize the people and values behind SCU Athletics. The event highlighted the contributions of student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, support staff, families and university personnel who help make success possible.
The inaugural service reflected Southwestern Christian University's commitment to celebrating excellence, teamwork and Christ-centered competition while encouraging student-athletes to use their talents and influence beyond the field, court and competition.
