BETHANY, Okla. — Southwestern Christian men's soccer secured a 2-0 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon, using two first-half goals to clinch the Sooner Athletic Conference opener.
The Eagles struck early when Augustine Mateos converted in the eighth minute off an assist from Pedro Belmont. SCU doubled its lead in the 40th minute as Louis Dufraiche found the net, set up by Otavio Avila. That score would hold as the Eagles leaned on stout defense and steady goalkeeping to preserve the clean sheet.
Goalkeeper Axel Tricot collected four saves to blank OPSU, while the SCU defense limited the Aggies to just six shots overall. The match grew physical with five yellow cards and two red cards issued, including late dismissals for OPSU's Zusipheyena Gxarisa and Hew Brown.
With the win, Southwestern Christian improved to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0 in SAC play. OPSU dropped to 4-2-2 and 0-1 in the conference.
