WICHITA, Kan. — Southwestern Christian University men's soccer picked up a dramatic 3-2 road win over Friends University on Friday night, using a late goal from Augustine Mateos to secure the victory.
After a scoreless first half, the Eagles struck quickly in the second. Louis Dufraiche opened the scoring in the 53rd minute with his first goal of the season, set up by Gabin Desplats. Less than 10 minutes later, Otavio Avila doubled the lead, again assisted by Desplats, putting SCU firmly in control.
Friends refused to go quietly. The Falcons cut the deficit in the 76th minute when Sora Shibata converted a penalty kick. Just six minutes later, Andres Michael Xibil found the equalizer, stunning the visitors and setting up a tense final stretch.
The Eagles, however, responded with poise. In the 86th minute, Mateos delivered the decisive goal off a feed from Matteo Esposito, sealing the hard-fought victory.
Both teams recorded 11 shots, but Southwestern held the edge in shots on goal, 6-4. SCU goalkeeper Enzo Camps tallied two saves, while Friends' Arturo Pombo-Palomer finished with three.
With the win, Southwestern Christian improved to 3-1-1 on the season, while Friends fell to 0-5. The Eagles will look to build on the momentum as they continue non-conference play before entering Sooner Athletic Conference action.
