SCU Softball Finishes as NCCAA National Runner-Up

The magical postseason run for Southwestern Christian University softball came to an end Wednesday night in Grapevine, Texas, but not before the Eagles battled through an unforgettable final day at the NCCAA National Tournament.

After opening the day with a dominant shutout victory over Columbia International and following it with an offensive explosion against Wayland Baptist, SCU earned a trip to the National Championship game. Despite a hard-fought effort against Northwestern (Minn.), the Eagles finished the season as NCCAA National Runner-Up, capping off an impressive postseason run with grit, resilience, and championship-level play.

Game 1: SCU Dominates Columbia International 7-0

Southwestern Christian opened championship day with one of its most complete performances of the season, shutting out Columbia International 7-0 behind a balanced offensive attack and dominant pitching.

The Eagles wasted no time taking control. In the top of the first inning, Trinity Norwood launched a two-run home run to right-center field after Kylee Coy reached base, instantly giving SCU a 2-0 lead and momentum.

SCU added to the lead in the third inning when Hannah Keele doubled to start the frame and eventually scored after pressure on the bases forced a Columbia International error. Ebony Garza later delivered an RBI single before Kelsie McCollom lifted a sacrifice fly to push the advantage to 5-0.

Norwood stayed hot in the fourth, driving in another run with an RBI single to make it 6-0. She later tripled in the seventh and scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the game.

Norwood powered the offense with a monster performance, going 4-for-4 with a home run, triple, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Garza added three hits and an RBI, while Keele collected two hits and scored twice. Danielle Burleson chipped in two hits in the win.

Inside the circle, SCU's pitching staff was outstanding. Lainey King set the tone early, Jessica Czikra earned the win with three scoreless innings, and Macey Weger and Gretchen Wendling helped finish off the seven-hit shutout. The Eagles held CIU scoreless despite allowing seven hits and never allowed the Rams to seriously threaten.

Game 2: Eagles Outslug Wayland Baptist 10-5 to Reach Championship

With a spot in the national title game on the line, SCU's offense delivered in a huge way, pounding out 17 hits in a 10-5 victory over Wayland Baptist.

The game didn't start easily for the Eagles, as Wayland Baptist jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning on a two-run homer from Mikayla Carrillo. But SCU immediately responded. RBI production from Ebony Garza and Jessie Moralez tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the inning.

After Wayland briefly reclaimed the lead, the Eagles erupted in the second inning. Sabrina Gilbert ripped a bases-clearing double down the left-field line, driving in three runs and swinging momentum completely toward SCU for a 5-3 lead.

The knockout punch came an inning later. Following singles from Jessie Moralez and Kelsie McCollom, Hailey Kuhlman crushed a three-run homer to left field, stretching the lead to 8-3 and electrifying the SCU dugout.

Wayland battled back to make it 8-5, but SCU answered again in the sixth inning. Ebony Garza drove in one run, and Moralez followed with an RBI double to put the game away.

The Eagles' lineup was relentless. Hannah Keele recorded three hits, Garza went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Gilbert finished with two doubles and three RBIs, McCollom added three hits, and Kuhlman's three-run blast highlighted a three-RBI performance.

SCU also pieced together another strong outing in the circle. Lainey King picked up the win, while Jessica Czikra, Macey Weger, and Gretchen Wendling combined to hold Wayland scoreless over the final three innings and secure the Eagles' spot in the championship game.

Championship Game: SCU Falls to Northwestern, Finishes Runner-Up

After fighting through two games earlier in the day, SCU squared off with Northwestern (Minn.) in the NCCAA National Championship game. The Eagles struck first but ultimately fell 4-1, ending an inspiring tournament run as national runner-up.

SCU broke through in the second inning when Kelsie McCollom singled, Alexis Underwood walked, and Jasmine Olivas delivered a hit to load the bases. Hannah Keele then brought home the Eagles' lone run with an RBI single to give SCU a 1-0 lead.

Northwestern responded in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on timely hitting to score twice and take a 2-1 advantage. The Eagles stayed within striking distance, but Northwestern added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend the lead to 4-1.

SCU struggled to find offense against Northwestern pitcher I. Strubbe, who limited the Eagles to just four hits over seven innings. Keele, Kylee Coy, Kelsie McCollom, and Jasmine Olivas each recorded one hit, while the Eagles stranded opportunities throughout the night.

Despite the loss, SCU's pitching staff battled. Lainey King, Jessica Czikra, and Macey Weger combined to keep the Eagles within reach throughout the championship contest.

Southwestern Christian closes the 2026 season as NCCAA National Runner-Up after an unforgettable postseason run filled with resilience, clutch performances, and championship-level effort. The Eagles battled through three games on the final day, earned their place on the national stage, and gave everything they had until the final out.
