Chickasha, Okla. -
Game 1
The Southwestern Christian University Eagles came out flat-footed against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers today, dropping the first game 2-12. An 11 run Drovers first inning put the Eagles behind early, and the Eagles could not make up the deficit.
The Drovers lineup got to SCU starter
Frangely Morel early, and an untimely error in the field did not help. Out of the pen,
Jacob Hogan,
Matt Gamblin, and
Kyle Duffey attempted to control the damage, with Gamblin performing the best, throwing four full innings and only giving up 1 run. Duffey threw the last inning, holding the Drovers to a zero, but the game was ultimately lost. Offensively,
Joey Thornton led the Eagles in hits from the bottom of the lineup, going 2-3, while
Matys Gagnon and
Jhors Gomez both went 1-3 with a walk and an RBI each. Thornton and
Elvis Rojas accounted for the runs scored in the game.
Following the loss, the Eagles will look to bounce back against their conference foes in the second game of the day.
Game 2
In an extra-innings thriller, the Southwestern Christian University Eagles defeated the USAO Drovers 7-5. The Eagles picked up 10 hits in the contest, battling back in the late innings to overcome a Drovers lead, and ultimately succeeding in fending off USAO in the bottom of the eighth.
Kyle Duffey would get the win for SCU, while
Alexis Hurens was awarded the save. SCU starter
Elian Cuevas threw six complete innings, striking out nine, walking three, and only allowing 2 runs.
Jhors Gomez had a great game at the plate, going 3-5 with 2 RBIs, and counting for a run himself.
Jake Cox and
Dario Paredes also found 2 hits, with Paredes picking up a RBI while Cox drew 1 walk.
Gregory Berroa,
Draike Sparks, and
Braden Browning all picked up a single hit, with Berroa totaling 2 runs, 2 RBIs, and a walk from the leadoff spot, and Browning counting for a run, grabbing an RBI, and working two walks.
SCU and USAO return tomorrow, April 4th, to finish the three-game series. The nine inning game will take place at Bill Smith Field in Chickasha, Oklahoma, starting at 6 PM.
