Hobbs, New Mexico - Southwestern Christian University opened the season on the road today, taking on the University of the Southwest Mustangs in New Mexico. The two teams fought for 14 innings straight, but in Game 1 of the doubleheader, the Mustangs would be victorious, 6-4.
GAME 1
The Mustangs were the first on the board today, finally getting to SCU starting pitcher
Frangely Morel in the third inning. Morel threw 2.2 innings, striking out 4 while only allowing 4 hits, although the majority of the hits came all at once in the third.
Jacob Hogan would get the chance to pitch to the game's end, and the reliever allowed only 1 hit and 1 run through 3 full innings. Offensively, the comeback attempt was spearheaded by
Dario Paredes, who went 3-4 with 3 RBIs off a double in the fifth. The cleanup man was backed up
Gregory Berroa,
Joseph Boone, and
Joey Thornton, who each had at least one hit. Boone would score the Eagles' fourth run on an error in the sixth inning, but the Eagles were ultimately shut down by the Mustangs closer in the seventh, falling just short of the win. As a team, SCU finished with 4 runs on 7 hits, with only 1 error.

Southwestern Christian wasted no time putting runs on the board in Game 2, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead.
Dario Paredes and
Draike Sparks were responsible for the 2 RBIs, and Paredes would continue his offensive success later in the game. In the meantime, the Mustangs battled back against SCU starting pitcher
Zach Gaudreau and scored 5 runs for the home squad, forcing Gaudreau out of the game after 3.1 innings pitched.
Alexis Hurens would be the reliever out of the pen and go 2 innings, giving up 3 runs to the Mustangs, the mark the scoring would be capped at tonight. The fifth and sixth innings saw the Eagles put up four more runs with 2 separate Paredes walks, a
Jhors Gomez walk, and a
Joseph Boone sac fly.Â
Matys Gagnon would finish 1-2 with 2 walks,
Elvis Rojas subbed into the game late and went 1-2 with a run, and Gomez ended the game with 3 walks in total.
