Evangels defeat SCU in final series of 2024 season

Bethany, Okla.

Southwestern Christian University lost the final series of the regular season to the #14 Mid-America Christian University Evangels in a three-game sweep this week.

Game 1: SCU 7 - 9 MACU

Despite an early run from Mid-America, the SCU offense took off in Game 1 of the series. All seven runs the SCU offense put up in the contest came in the first four innings, starting when a run scored on a fielder's choice and another on an error. Joseph Boone and Phoenix Nelson grabbed RBIs, Boone with a single, and Nelson with a sac fly. Dario Paredes knocked an RBI single in the second to answer a MACU run in the same inning. In the fourth, Boone would strike again with another RBI single, and Braden Browning took a page out of Nelson's book with a sac fly of his own to score the seventh run. MACU would bring it within one in the seventh, and despite a great outing from Alexis Hurens, the Evangels found two runs in the ninth to steal the win.

Top Performers:

Alexis Hurens: 4.0 IP, 3 SO, 6 H, 4 R (L)

Joseph Boone: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB

Game 2: SCU 0 - 7 MACU

Game 2 did not go the way of the Eagles, as Mid-America again jumped out to an early lead, this time off Eagles starter Gabriel Figueroa. While the Evangels knocked 11 hits, SCU could only manage four, as the Eagles were shut out in the contest. Korey Aytes threw 3 ? scoreless innings, but while playing from behind, the SCU offense could not manage the comeback.

Top Performers:

Korey Aytes: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 SO, 0 R

Jhors Gomez: 2-3

Braden Browning: 1-2

Draike Sparks: 1-4

Game 3: SCU 0 - 6 MACU

Shades of Game 2 were present in the final home game of the year, as the Eagles went down early for the third time in a row and failed to score a run. Henry Ogando took the loss after going 3 ? innings, but again SCU got mileage out of their relievers, as Connor O'Malley and Zach Gaudreau tossed scoreless innings for the Eagles. Drake Sparks was 2-3, Jhors Gomez was 1-2, while Tyler Reeves and Matys Gagnon went 1-3.

Top Performers:

Connor O'Malley: 6.0 IP, 9 H, 5 SO, 5 R
