SCU Wins in The Final Seconds

Bethany, Okla.-- Southwestern Christian pulled off a last second win on Saturday afternoon as they came away with a clutch 69-68 win over the Pioneer's. The win was huge for Southwestern Christian (10-6, 8-5 SAC), who came into the game at 5th place in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The loss dropped Wayland Baptist (10-12, 6-9 SAC) to 8th place.

The contest was tight throughout the first half, but a late surge allowed the Pioneer's take a 34-30 lead into the half. The team shot a scorching 12-32 from the field, 2-11 from the three point line, and 4-8 from the free throw line in that first half.The game remained close in the second half as SCU was never able to build that lead greater than 2. With 3 and a half minutes to go in the second half, Wayland would be up on SCU by 10 points 64-54. 

The game went SCU way from there as the Eagles found a way to steal the ball 4 times in the final 2 minutes. With 40 seconds left in the game SCU was down by 6 (62-68) when Khristien White hit a huge three point shot when he received a pass from Jordan Williams. Then Ronald Moore received a pass from Luiz Machado Jr inside the paint to get the Eagles within 1 point of the Pioneers. The Pioneers then turned the ball over with 10 seconds left giving SCU one final shot to win the game. Derek Dantzler gets the ball in the paint and goes up strong to find a way to score the winning basket. With less than two seconds left on the clock, Wayland could only throw up a prayer that missed and gave the game to SCU.

 Southwestern Christian had a horrible shooting night but kept finding ways to score, The Eagles shot 27-66 from the floor averaging 40%. SCU shot 5-22 from the three point line (22%) and from the free throw line shot 10-19 (52%). Derek Dantzler led the Eagles in points tonight with 15. The Eagles were Out-Rebounded by the Tigers 30-38, SCU had 15 offensive rebounds and scoring 9 second chance points, Braleen Patterson led SCU in Rebounds with 7 points. The bench contributed 18 points in this game, The Senior Derek Dantzler finished the night with 6-14 shooting, 1-2 from three, his Final stat line was, 15 pts, 3 Rebs, 3 Ast, 2 Stl. Khristien White  also contributed to the Offensive effort with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assist. Luiz Machado Jr. finished with 13 pts, 1 Rebs, and 3 Ast, and 3 steals.

The Eagles will return to action on the road, Monday, January 24th, at 8:00 PM against the Mid-Ameerica Christian University (12-9, 5-8 SAC) in another Sooner Athletic Conference matchup.
